Hot waxing is an increasingly popular way to lubricate chains. Solid wax does not attract dirt, keeps your drivetrain clean, and repels grime better than conventional chain oils. 

BLACK DIAMOND HOT WAX chain wax combines the market’s most lubricating Black Diamond additive technology with over 70 years of REX wax expertise. Hot waxing makes it easier to keep your bike clean and helps protect chains and cogs from wear. A hot-waxed chain doesn’t smear or stain, and it can be cleaned with just hot water.

How to switch to hot wax:

1. Before the first use, thoroughly clean the chain with a solvent-based cleaner such as Rex Chain Cleaner. Proper cleaning improves wax adhesion and extends lubrication life. If the chain has been hot waxed before, rinsing with hot water and wiping is enough. Factory grease must be removed from new chains before waxing.
2. Melt all the wax blocks over low heat (max. 100°C) in, for example, a pot, together with the chain you’re treating. Let the chain warm up and stir it around in the wax so the wax penetrates the chain fully. You can treat several chains in one batch.
3. Lift the chain out to cool. The treatment has worked well if the chain is stiff. Flex the chain links to loosen them up and install the chain. It will continue to free up over the first few kilometers of riding.
4. Re-wax the chain when it becomes noisy. To keep the wax cleaner for longer, first rinse the chain with hot water, wipe it dry and let it dry thoroughly. Then repeat the waxing process.

Two-Stage Waxing as an Option – Mix the Blend That Suits You Best

We have combined the additives from the test-winning Black Diamond chain oil with a Rex wax base. To ensure consistent quality, all Black Diamond additives are concentrated into a single black block that is hand-poured in our R&D lab in Hartola. This additive block is like a bottle of Black Diamond chain oil in solid form!

The eleven white Rex paraffin blocks contain a carefully selected wax blend that, together with the additive block, offers the best lubrication performance on the market. By melting all the blocks (11+1) together you get a wax blend that works excellently in all conditions.

By melting the additive block together with four of the light wax blocks (4+1), you get a very durable blend that is ideal for long rides and racing. The remaining seven wax blocks can be used as a cleaning pre-wax, which helps keep the 4+1 blend cleaner and high-performing for longer. This two-stage waxing process gives you everything you need in one package!

Troubleshooting:

Lubrication doesn’t last long enough

• Oil or factory grease remains on the chain and prevents the wax from bonding. Clean and hot wax again.
• Chain oil or factory grease has mixed into the wax and weakened its properties. Replace the wax with a fresh batch.
• The chain’s surface treatment prevents proper wax adhesion. (Applies to certain KMC chains.)
• The chain is worn. A very loose and worn chain will become noisy more quickly.
• After break-in, a waxed chain is generally noisier than one lubricated with wet oil. A higher noise level is normal even though lubrication remains effective.

Chains are rusting

• Susceptibility to surface rust is a characteristic of all hot waxes. Dry the chain after riding in wet conditions or after washing.

Gears are not working properly

• After waxing, shift through all the gears on the bike from one extreme to the other so the chain loosens up laterally. After this, the gears will work as they should.
